Transitions® Lens Replacement for Existing Frames
Keep the frames you already own and replace the lenses with Transitions light-adaptive prescription lenses. Compare everyday GEN S, extra-dark XTRActive, and eligible single-vision or progressive options before ordering.
Can Transitions lenses be added to existing frames?
Yes—when the frame, prescription, measurements, lens design, and selected Transitions product are compatible. RenewLens can remove the old lenses from frames you already wear and install newly made Transitions prescription lenses, allowing you to keep a familiar frame instead of purchasing another complete pair.
Transitions is a brand of photochromic, or light-adaptive, lens technology. The lenses respond to changing light, darkening outdoors and returning toward their indoor state when the activating light is removed. The exact indoor appearance, outdoor darkness, activation speed, and in-car performance depend on the Transitions family, lens material, temperature, and light conditions.
Transitions replacement lenses by prescription type
Single-vision Transitions lenses
Designed for one prescribed viewing range, such as everyday distance or reading vision. Eligible single-vision lenses may be available with Transitions technology in several materials and colors.
Progressive Transitions lenses
Combine distance, intermediate, and near correction with light-adaptive technology in one no-line multifocal lens. The progressive design and Transitions technology are separate parts of the finished lens.
Lens materials and colors
Depending on the prescription and product, Transitions options may be available in standard plastic, polycarbonate, or high-index materials and in multiple colors. Not every material, color, or Transitions family is available with every prescription or lens design.
Compare Transitions GEN S and XTRActive lenses
The best Transitions lens depends on whether you prioritize a clear everyday indoor appearance, extra darkness outdoors, activation behind the windshield, or outdoor polarization.
Transitions® GEN S™
Designed as an everyday light-adaptive option that is clear indoors, darkens outdoors, and returns toward clear after leaving activating light. It is the natural starting point for customers who want everyday photochromic convenience.
Transitions® XTRActive®
Designed for wearers who want extra darkness and extra light protection. XTRActive lenses have a slight protective tint indoors, become extra dark outdoors, and activate to some degree behind the windshield.
XTRActive® Polarized
Has a slight protective tint indoors, darkens behind the windshield, and becomes dynamically polarized outdoors as it activates. It is not polarized indoors or classified as polarized behind the windshield.
Which Transitions lens may fit your needs?
Consider GEN S if…
- You want an everyday lens designed to be clear indoors.
- You move regularly between indoor and outdoor settings.
- You prioritize everyday responsiveness and color choice.
- You do not require meaningful activation behind a windshield.
Consider XTRActive if…
- You are frequently exposed to bright outdoor light.
- You want a product designed to become extra dark outdoors.
- You value some activation behind the windshield.
- You accept a slight protective tint while indoors.
What Transitions lenses do—and do not do
They can provide
- Light-adaptive performance in eligible prescription lenses
- Outdoor darkening without changing to a separate pair
- Multiple product families, colors, designs, and materials
- UV protection and product-specific light filtering
They do not guarantee
- The same darkness in every temperature or lighting condition
- Full sunglass darkness inside every vehicle
- Polarization unless the exact product includes it
- Compatibility with every prescription, frame, or lens package
Transitions lenses for driving
A vehicle windshield blocks much of the UV light that activates conventional photochromic lenses. As a result, everyday Transitions products may show limited activation in the car. XTRActive products are designed to activate to some degree behind the windshield, but their in-car performance is not the same as full outdoor activation.
XTRActive Polarized darkens in the car but is not classified as polarized behind the windshield. Its dynamic polarization develops outdoors as the lenses activate. Customers who need consistent polarized sun protection while driving should compare dedicated polarized prescription sun lenses as a separate option.
Can Transitions be combined with progressive lenses or Crizal coating?
Some compatible lens packages can combine a single-vision or progressive design with Transitions technology and an anti-reflective coating such as an eligible Crizal product. These are separate components, and the exact combination depends on the prescription, material, product family, and current laboratory availability.
Progressive design
The progressive design controls the distance, intermediate, and near viewing zones. Transitions technology controls light adaptation.
Anti-reflective coating
An eligible coating can reduce lens-surface reflections and add product-specific surface protection. Confirm the exact coating available.

Frequently asked questions
Can I replace the lenses in my current frames with Transitions lenses?
Yes, when the frames, prescription, measurements, lens design, and selected Transitions product are compatible. RenewLens reviews the order and frames before fulfillment.
Are Transitions lenses clear indoors?
Transitions GEN S is designed to be clear indoors. XTRActive and XTRActive Polarized have a slight protective tint indoors, so the exact indoor appearance depends on the product selected.
Do Transitions lenses darken inside a car?
Everyday photochromic lenses may show limited activation behind a UV-blocking windshield. XTRActive products are designed to darken to some degree in the car, although in-car activation is not the same as full outdoor activation.
What is the difference between Transitions GEN S and XTRActive?
GEN S is designed as an everyday option that is clear indoors and darkens outdoors. XTRActive has a slight indoor tint and is designed for extra darkness outdoors and some activation behind the windshield.
Are XTRActive Polarized lenses polarized in the car?
No. They darken behind the windshield but are not classified as polarized in the car. Dynamic polarization develops outdoors as the lenses activate.
Are Transitions lenses available in single vision and progressive?
Transitions options may be available with eligible single-vision and progressive lenses. Availability depends on product family, prescription, material, design, and current laboratory options.
Can Transitions lenses have anti-reflective coating?
Some compatible Transitions lens packages may include an eligible anti-reflective coating. Confirm the exact coating name and included features when ordering.
Do Transitions lenses replace polarized sunglasses?
Not always. Standard Transitions lenses are light-adaptive but not polarized. XTRActive Polarized develops polarization outdoors. Dedicated polarized prescription sunglasses may be preferable when consistent outdoor polarization is the priority.
